Federal Work-Study Progam

The Federal Work-Study Program is a part-time job opportunity that allows students to earn money to help pay for their expenses.  Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled at least part-time, based upon documentation of financial need and the availability of funds. Students must first have completed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine their eligibility (additional documentation may be requested). If eligible, students may receive need-based work-study as part of their financial aid awards package.

As part of the Federal Work-Study Program, students have the option to participate in Community Service Work-Study, which provides opportunities for students to work in local community service agencies off-campus, or as Literacy/Math Tutors in local community programs such as the local Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

  • Federal Work-Study Quick Facts:
    • It provides part-time employment while you are enrolled in school.
    • It’s available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with financial need.
    • It’s available to full-time or part-time students.
  • How much can I earn? 

    You’ll earn at least the current federal minimum wage, which is currently listed at $11 an hour, where students are limited to work no more than 20 hours a week (during the Fall and Spring semesters).

    Your total work-study award depends on

    • when you apply,
    • your level of financial need, and
    • your school’s funding level.
  • Can I work as many hours as I want? 

    No. The amount you earn can’t exceed your total Federal Work-Study award. When assigning work hours, your supervisor will consider your class schedule and your academic progress.
