STAR is a structured academic recovery program to help students stay or get on track to persist and graduate. The program is open to all students through referral, students at-risk of academic suspension and is required for students admitted or returning through appeal or readmitted students.

The mission of the program is to help students identify their individual academic needs and barriers that prevent optimal performance and then develop skills to meet their educational goals.

Program Structure

Every student enrolled in the program:
Must complete-

  • A student data form
  • A one-time self-assessment survey
  • A one-time persistence survey
  • An intake interview with the student success center
  • An annual student success center program evaluation and

Must agree-

  • To comply with program terms and requirements by initial and signature.

Program Terms

  • Limit enrollment to no more than 15 semester hours or as indicated by appeal policy.
  • Maintain at least a 2.0-semester grade point average for the academic term.
  • Spend a minimum of five hours a week studying in an approved study site on campus and provide documentation of those hours to their SSC coach.
  • Adhere to the STAR attendance policy, which allows no unexcused absences.
  • Receive coaching in the Student Success Center (SSC) and or meet regularly with a counselor in the Student Counseling, Assessment, and Development Center if recommended.
  • Take on-campus courses. NO online or correspondence courses are allowed.
  • Pre-register each semester.

  • Pass all courses each semester.
  • Access UAPB email and check incoming messages regularly.

Senior Completion

Destination Graduation” assists students near graduation with small balances that may prevent their persistence to graduation. The mini-grant is available to students graduating with a year.

Senior Completion Program

“Destination Graduation,” the senior completion program implemented by the Student Success Center, helps low-income senior-level students graduate. The pilot initiative purports to reduce the number of students nearing graduation who officially withdraw from the University for various reasons including unmet financial need. Students on track to graduate in two semesters may qualify for a small grant to help pay tuition. The minimum eligibility criteria are:

  • Verified graduation date within two semesters
  • Has an unmet financial need of $1200 or less
  • Has ability to contribute 25% “skin in the game” toward tuition or balance
  • Agree to perform community service
  • Agree to participate in professional development skills training

Fall 2016 was the first semester of implementation for the project funded in part by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) and UAPB.

College Transfer Help & Resources

The Arkansas Course Transfer System (ACTS)

The Arkansas Course Transfer System (ACTS) contains information about the transferability of courses within Arkansas public colleges and universities. Students are guaranteed the transfer of applicable credits and the equitable treatment in the application of credits for the admissions and degree requirements. Course transferability is not guaranteed for courses listed in ACTS as “No Comparable Course.” Additionally, courses with a “D” frequently do not transfer and institutional policies may vary. ACTS may be accessed on the Internet by going to the ADHE website and selecting Course Transfer (http://acts.adhe.edu).
