UAPB Social Work Graduate's Success Stories

Graduate Spot Light Ms. Tina Scott-Jackson

My name is Tina Scott-Jackson, and I was born and raised in Monticello, Arkansas. I had my first child at 16 and dropped out of school. I received my General Education Diploma from the Little Rock Adult Education Center. Where I went on to work for the Little Rock School District for nine years; during this time, I went to several colleges but never completed them. Life instances seemed to continue and prolonged my education. But there was always that part of me that wanted a college education. I was going through a divorce and homeless. I struggled at my job because there were no promotions or advancements without a degree. So, that year I made up my mind that at all costs, I was going back to college for Social Work as I had planned many years ago. When I came to the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff Social Work Department, I met with Dr. Gloria Davis. She was so gentle, encouraging, and kind. On that day, she told me that my life would change forever. Then she asked, “Are you ready” and I replied, “Yes, I am.” She assisted me with my class schedule, gave me the social work degree plan and pamphlets, and said, “I’ll see you soon”. Finally, I was where I needed to be (UAPB). During my education journey at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, the faculty and staff made this opportunity glorious. During my studies, I obtained a new position with the Arkansas Division of Workforce Services. The University of Arkansas Pine Bluff supplied every one of my needs and made it possible to be where I am now, and I am forever grateful for that. Dr. Tamara Glover, Thank You for pushing the Class of 2022 the way that you did after Dr. Davis retired. You stepped in with a vision, plan, and goals that propelled the students to the next level.

One thing that I have learned about this life. It is not where you start but how you finish. You must put in the work to succeed. A determined mind is a mind whose choice is definite. If it were easy, then it would not be worth it. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Social Work with a minor in Criminal Justice. I obtained the position of Social Work President and BSW Student of the Year. After graduating, I am now gainfully employed with the Arkansas Department of Human Services. This achievement would not be possible if the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff did not give me an opportunity as a student. UAPB changed my life and career focus for my future endeavors.

Again, Golden Lions Family, thank you for your encouragement, guidance, and support.
