Welcome from the History Program Coordinator at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
We aim for student success and excellence in the study of history for students who are completing their General Education Requirements, students who minor in history, our history and social studies education majors and those who take history courses as electives. Together we can discover who we are by exploring where we have been. Our professors offer a broad range of courses to accommodate students with an interest in all regions of the globe and to provide our majors and minors with a sound foundation for professional development or further study in graduate school.
Our students may pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with an emphasis in history, a Bachelor of Social Studies Education, or a minor in history. Interested students may enhance their educational experience and professional development by participation in the History Club or in Phi Alpha Theta, the national honor society for outstanding students in the field of history.
We encourage any student to drop by our offices in Dawson-Hicks Hall and to take a history course that interests you. We look forward to growth in the History Program and to the continued success of our students!
History is one of the most ancient academic disciplines and includes the study of every form of human endeavor. Historians depend primarily on written sources for evidence, but incorporate other types of physical evidence as well. Historians apply analytical and interpretive skills in order to first determine what happened in the past and then explain why it happened. Knowledge of history provides understanding of how and why societies and institutions evolved to their present condition. This knowledge and understanding is critical in determining the likely results of contemporary trends and policies in a society. Thus, reasoned judgments can be made as to whether current trends should be allowed to continue or an alternative course of action should be taken.
