Welcome to the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department (HPER) at the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff. The department strives for excellence and committed to your success as you progress through your education.

There are two different undergraduate programs that the department offers. First the department offers Physical Education and Health, Teaching Option, instructs individuals for a Teacher’s License for the State of Arkansas for grades Kindergarten to 12^th. It will also include a Coaching Endorsement. The department also offers a Physical Education and Health, Wellness Option. This non-licensure option focuses on Recreation in which individuals could become Personal Trainers, Sports Directors at Recreation Centers, and other fields in the Recreation and Fitness Industry.

The department has three different minors. There are minors in Recreation (non-teaching) and Wellness (non-teaching). The department also offers Coaching Endorsement to individuals who are earning a Teaching License in another discipline.

There is a Master of Education in Physical Education degree offered with two different options. The Teaching option works with individuals who want to become teachers or holds a current teacher license. The Sports Programming, Non-Teaching, option is for individuals who want to pursue a graduate degree in Physical Education.

Dr. Garner serves as the esteemed Chair of the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Department at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). With a distinguished career in academia and a profound commitment to student success,
Dr. Garner holds advanced degrees from the University of South Alabama and the University of Arkansas Little Rock.

He has been instrumental in advancing the HPER Department’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles and physical activity through comprehensive education and community engagement. Under their leadership, the department has expanded its academic programs, incorporating cutting-edge research and the latest industry practices to prepare students for successful careers.
