A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A UAPB GRADUATE STUDENT
A day in the life a graduate student will change day to day. During the regular semester you will have about two or three classes. In those classes there will be only graduate students with the exception of a few classes that contain undergraduates. Classes will be small, containing from 5-10 students. Individual research varies depending on the scope of the research. Some students will spend most of their time at the pond research facility and others will spend it in the lab or on rivers or lakes.
The nice thing about UAPB is that projects are big and there is always a need for help. Thus, if you work in a lab and need to get out, there are opportunities to sample rivers or harvest fish in aquaculture ponds. If students have time, they are expected to help with other student’s research as needed. Summer is mostly research with one or two classes. Students are expected to be in every class unless research needs to be done. The only other excuse for missing class is a school related meeting. January through March is the time of scientific and stakeholder meetings.
UAPB students will be expected to do a poster or a PowerPoint presentation at all UAPB meetings (UAPB Research Forum, UAPB Rural Life Conference). Other meetings you may present at will be throughout the state and out of state. The amount of meetings you attend will depend on the amount of quality research you have completed and the available money your major professor has for you. Previous meeting locations have included New Orleans, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Atlanta, St. Louis, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.
