    The Department of Human Sciences’ mission is to provide quality education and scientific knowledge to students (individuals), families and communities through teaching, research and meaningful outreach opportunities, while preparing graduates for careers, graduate studies and leadership roles in a competitive global environment.

  • Accreditation

    The Department of Human Sciences reaffirmation of accreditation session at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) was conducted April 15-19, 2023. The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) oversees the accreditation process. AAFCS-accredited programs are evaluated extensively and must conform to the expectation of standards for a quality education. Institutions of higher education and their family and consumer sciences programs benefit from the self-evaluation and program improvement provided by the accreditation process. UAPB has the only accredited human sciences program in the state of Arkansas.

DEGREE OPTIONS

  • Foodservice/Restaurant Management

    The Foodservice and Restaurant Management program focuses on preparation of students for managerial and supervisory positions in the food service industry as food production managers, food and beverage supervisors, personnel training supervisors and consulting food specialists. This program is designed for individuals who do not wish to become nutritionists or Registered Dietitians.

    Objectives:

    1. To provide experiences for students to gain knowledge of fundamental foodservice operations and management.
    2. To prepare students for managerial positions in the hospitality foodservice industry.
    3. To provide students with the opportunity to develop analytical skills in research or other self-directed projects.
    4. To prepare students to pursue graduate study in hospitality foodservice administration or related fields.

  • Hospitality and Tourism Management

    The field of hospitality and tourism management is fast growing and dynamic, offering exciting career options worldwide. This program will prepare the next generation of hospitality leaders for a successful career in industry or academia by delivering an authentic educational experience through experiential learning, industry speakers and strong partnerships with the hospitality industry.

  • Human Development and Family Studies

    The Human Development and Family Studies program focuses on the physical, social and psychological growth and development and interpersonal relationships in family environmental settings. It prepares students for employment as child development center directors, child care specialists, nursery school/day care teachers, adoption placement agents and caseworkers.

    1. To prepare students for work as directors of child care centers and nursery school/day care teachers.
    2. To prepare students for careers in child welfare, the social services and Cooperative Extension.

  • Merchandising, Textiles and Design

    The Merchandising, Textiles and Design program prepares students for entry level and management positions in a variety of fashion and merchandising careers in such areas as retailing, design and textile marketing or development. Program offerings include basic courses in merchandising, textiles and fashion design.

    Objectives:
    To develop creative, curious and analytical students with an ability to understand and provide solutions for current and future consumer and industry needs and issues related to merchandising, textiles, apparel design and related areas.

    1. To enable students to apply theories related to aesthetics, design, cultural, social, psychological and political aspects of dress, fashion and textiles to industry and societal concerns.
    2. To provide students with the education and learning experiences that will prepare them for entry level positions, as well as inspire, motivate and give students the tools needed to progress through their careers.
    3. To provide students with an understanding of the international industries’ processes and the supply chains used in developing, producing and marketing textile and apparel products.
    4. To prepare students for graduate studies in merchandising, textiles, apparel and/or related areas.

  • Human Sciences Education, B.S.

    The Human Sciences Education option is designed to provide courses for students intending to teach on the secondary level. In addition to the course requirements in Human Sciences, students must also meet all of the requirements of the School of Education for prospective teachers.

    Objectives:

    1. To provide Human Sciences Education students with the necessary background for teaching in secondary, middle schools, and adult education programs.
    2. To prepare vocational human sciences students for work as home service directors and home economists in Cooperative Extension Services, in business, and in other professional positions related to human sciences education.
    3. To provide students with knowledge of consumer oriented organizations and agencies at the local, state, and national levels that will enable them to assume responsibilities appropriate to their professional roles.
    4. To prepare vocational human sciences students for graduate study in human sciences education and/or related fields.

  • Nutrition and Food Science

    The program is designed to prepare students to work in a variety of settings related to food production, marketing and sales, and health promotion.

    The curriculum includes basic and advanced courses in nutrition science, foods, and food science.

    In addition to academics, students have experiential requirements with local food producers and processors that showcase nutrition and food science-related careers.

    Goals:

    1. Provide comprehensive academic and practical experiences for students that will prepare them for careers in nutrition and food science such as food production, food product development, sales and marketing, and/or graduate school.
    2. Prepare students to serve the Arkansas Delta region and the state by arranging for internships with local food producers and processors that showcase nutrition and food science-related careers.
