Addiction Studies Award Two Degrees During Spring Commencement

On Saturday, May 6, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) saw graduates who earned their master’s degree in Arkansas’s only graduate-level Addiction Studies program. The graduate program is offered to students online and is funded by the Master Tobacco Settlement Agreement.

Alumnus Reflects on the Aquaculture/Fisheries Program

Andrew Maina, originally from the east African country of Kenya, says his lifelong interest in science led him to enroll in the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff’s (UAPB) graduate program in aquaculture/fisheries.

“My father was a pharmacist, and I also started to get interested in science in elementary school,” he said. “In high school, I became really interested in biology. My love for the outdoors and wildlife started in Kenya but continues to play a part in my life in my new home of North Carolina. I frequently go hiking and birdwatching.”

UAPB MBA Students Speak at Arkansas Governor’s Conference on Tourism

Two Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) recently presented at the 49th Annual Arkansas Governor’s Conference on Tourism, Dr. Suzzette Goldmon, assistant professor and coordinator for UAPB’s hospitality and tourism management program, said. Sonya Lockett, whose MBA focus area is hospitality and tourism management, and Carlas R. Smith, whose focus is gaming and casino management, gave a presentation titled “The Impact of Gaming on Arkansas Tourism” during the conference’s student session.

“This year, for the first time ever, the Arkansas Conference on Tourism invited the state’s colleges and universities to participate in the conference sessions,” Dr. Goldmon said.

National Science Foundation Grant to Support UAPB’s First Physical Sciences Graduate Program

With a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff (UAPB) will lead a collaboration with the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville (UAF) and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) to establish a Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) program.

UAPB is one of three historically Black colleges, and universities (HBCUs) awarded the 2022 NSF Expanding Capacity in Quantum Information Science and Engineering program (ExpandQISE) grant, along with Howard University and Morehouse College. According to the Expand QISE Program, the award grants up to $5 million over five years to advance Quantum information into a new generation of computers, detectors, and new materials of the future.
